Who Is My Neighbor?

When Jesus said, “Love your neighbor as yourself” (Mark 12:31), He wasn’t just talking about the person who lives next door. In fact, Jesus wants us to think much bigger! Your neighbor can be anyone you meet or hear about who needs love and kindness.

Jesus explained this in a story called the Parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25–37). A man was traveling down a road when he was attacked by robbers and left badly hurt. Several people walked right past him without helping—people you’d expect to stop and lend a hand.

But then a Samaritan, someone who was considered an outsider, stopped and took care of him. The Samaritan cleaned the man’s wounds, put him on his donkey, and made sure he was safe and cared for. Jesus told this story to show us that loving our neighbor means helping anyone in need, even if they’re different from us.

Sometimes it’s easy to love people we already know and like, like our family and friends. But Jesus challenges us to love everyone, even people we don’t know or those who are hard to get along with. Why? Because that’s how Jesus loves us!

Want to start loving your neighbor today? Here are some simple ideas:

  • Be kind: Smile, say hello, or help someone carry something heavy.
  • Help out: Share your toys, clean up without being asked, or help a classmate with their work.
  • Pray for others: Ask God to bless the people around you and show you how you can help them.

Loving your neighbor is a way to show others Jesus’ love. Who can you show kindness to today?
