“Wow! Look at that!â exclaimed Arabella. She and her father were taking their annual Christmas lights tour around the city.
Dad pulled to the side of the street so they could get a good look at the house that had won the award for having the best display of lights. They admired it for a few minutes.
As they continued on their way, they agreed that no other place could compare to the house that had won the award.
The next day was the first day of Christmas vacation for Arabella. âIâm glad we wonât have school for a little while,â she said at breakfast. âI canât do anything right there. I donât read well, I canât spell, and Iâm crummy in math.â She let out a long, exaggerated sigh. âIâm a failure.â
âArabella,â said Dad, âI know school is hard for you, but⌠â He paused. âGo get your coat,â he said as she finished her breakfast. âI want you to see something.â
Arabella eagerly jumped up and went out to the car with her father. âWhere are we going?â she asked as they drove through the city.
âYouâll see,â said Dad. Soon he pulled to the side of the street. âDo you recognize this place?â
Arabella nodded. âThatâs the house we saw last nightâthe one that had all the beautiful lights!â she said in surprise. âIt looks different now. It doesnât look very special at all.â
Dad nodded. âYouâre rightâitâs when we see the lights shining in the night that it looks beautiful,â he said. âI thought about that when you said you couldnât do anything well. You see, we may not feel like weâre all that special, especially when we arenât able to do things as well as weâd like. We might think weâre as ordinary as that house looks right now. But because weâre Christians, we have something specialâwe have the light of life. People need to see that lightâthe light of Jesus in us.â
Dad smiled. âArabella,â he said, âI want you to know that the Lord surely does shine through youâand thatâs much more important than getting good grades in school. Youâre a special light for Jesus shining brightly in the night.â
So how about you?
Do you ever feel like a failure? Does it ever seem like you canât do anything well or that you donât have any special talents or abilities? If youâre a Christian, God has given you everything you need to be a light and a witness in the world. That makes you a very special personâto God and to everyone you meet!
