Today is Emma M. Nutt Day! What Did She Do?

Now normally, I think that made-up holidays are kinda ridiculous, like National Blueberry Popsicle Day, or World Coconut Day. But today’s is actually kinda cool, today is Emma M. Nutt Day!

When telephones were first invented, you had to call the telephone operator and tell them who you wanted to talk to, and they’d connect you.

At first telephone companies hired teenage boys for the job, but apparently they were very rude! So they started hiring young women who could be professional, and Emma Nutt was the very first one.

She was hired on September 1, 1878 at the Edwin Holmes Telephone Dispatch Company in Boston. The funny thing is, her sister Stella was hired just a few hours later that same day!
