Annistyn stomped into the kitchen when she got home from school and collapsed into a chair so hard it made a scraping noise against the floor.
âAnnistyn!â said Mom. âBe careful! Youâre going to leave marks!â She sighed as Annistynâs little sister started crying in the other room. âThis house is like a war zone,â she muttered. âOh, for some peace and quiet!â
Annistyn was so wrapped up in her own thoughts she hadnât heard a word her mother had said. âWho do you think got the part of Mary in the Christmas play?â she asked sarcastically. âHolly, of course! She didnât even want it, but sheâs Mary, and Iâm the narratorâagain!â
Dad looked up. âIsnât Holly your best friend?â he asked.
Annistyn made a face. âWas my best friend,â she corrected.
As four-year-old Emmy helped Mom decorate cookies a little later, she practiced her part for the Christmas program. âGlory to God in⌠in the high⌠highest, and on earth peace, good⌠good will toward men,â she recited. Then she asked, âMommy, did Mary get baby clothes for Jesus at the Goodwill store?â
Mom smiled. âNo, honey,â she said. âThey didnât have Goodwill stores then.â
âMom,â said Annistyn, coming back into the kitchen, âwhen are Aunt Lynn and Uncle Ben coming?â
Mom frowned. âTheyâre not,â she replied shortly.
âNot coming!â cried Annistyn. âWhy not? It wonât feel like Christmas without them!â Mom didnât reply, and Annistyn looked at her suspiciously. âWe havenât seen them since Grandmaâs funeral,â said Annistyn with a frown. âAre you still mad about that picture album?â
âIâd rather not discuss it,â Mom said icily.
âYouâre mad at Aunt Lynn,â said little Emmy, âand Annistynâs mad at Holly. I donât know who Iâm mad at.â She went back to practicing her lines. âOn earth peace, good will toward men.â
Mom sighed. âOn earth peace, good will toward men,â she repeated softly. âI could use some peace and good will right now.â She went to the telephone. âIâm going to call Aunt Lynn. Itâs not too late to invite them to come for Christmas.â
Annistyn smiled. âReally?â
âReally,â said Mom. âAnd maybe you should do the same with Holly?â
âI⌠I⌠well, okay,â said Annistyn. âMaybe she can come over and help decorate these cookies.â
So how about you?
Do you have bad feelings in your heart toward anyone? Is there someone you need to make up with? Jesus came to bring peace and good will on earth. He wants you to have peace in your heart and live in peace with others. If there are hard feelings between you and someone else, do what you can to mend the problem.
