Christingle – Christ Light

Have you ever heard of Christingles? They are new to me but they have actually been around since the 1700s in Germany.

Bishop Johannes de Watteville is said to have started the tradition to help children think about Jesus. From there it was passed down and was made popular in the United Kingdom as a special Christingle service at church.

Today you can still attend a Christingle service in the UK and sometimes even near you. These services are much like a Christmas Eve candlelight service you might know about.

So what is a Christingle exactly? It’s basically an orange that is decorated with different things that tell the story of Jesus. The orange represents the world; the red ribbon represents Jesus’s blood; and the candle represents Jesus, who is the light of the world. Christingle literally means “Christ Light.” They are kind of cool-looking and even yummy.

Watch the video below on how to make your very own Christingle. What a fun way to remember Jesus coming to earth!
