Where Did Ukuleles Come From?

Sometime when I was in middle school, one of my aunts gave me a weirdly small guitar because she knew I liked playing music.

It turns out that wasn’t miniature guitar, it was actually a ukulele! I don’t think I even knew about ukuleles until I got one.

Turns out, ukuleles actually got started in Portugal, almost on the other side of the world from Hawaii. They were called machetes there.

Then some immigrants from Portugal moved to Hawaii and brought it along, and eventually the royal family of Hawaii got into playing and that’s kinda how it got popular!
