Love Rejoices in the Truth – Love Does Giveaway!

1 Corinthians 13:6 “Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.”

Love is one of the best gifts that God has given us, and in 1 Corinthian 13 the Apostle Paul says it’s even more important than wisdom or giving up your own life to save other people.

Because it’s such a good gift, the real love the Bible talks about can’t have anything to do with doing wrong and disobeying God. That’s what 1 Corinthians 13:6 means when it says, “Love does not delight in evil…”

Doing evil and sinning always hurts someone, and a lot of times it hurts a lot of someones. If you love others like God wants you to, then you don’t want to hurt other people, you want to help them and do what’s best for them. That’s the opposite of “delighting in evil.”

1 Corinthians 13:6 also says, “Love…rejoices with the truth.” The opposite of truth is a lie, and lying is a sin that’s used to cover up other sins a person has done. Sin (disobeying God) makes Him really sad and hurts other people, because it is a way of “delighting in evil”.

That’s why love “rejoices with the truth”, because telling God and others the truth that you’ve sinned is the first step to accepting the forgiveness for sin God offers and being forgiven by those you’ve hurt.

In fact, the Greek word alētheia used here for “truth” comes from the same root word as the Greek alētheian, or “truth”, in John 8:32, where Jesus says, “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

The truth Jesus talks about here is the Gospel, that He came to earth to die for all of our sins so we could be freed from being slaves to sin and become children of God! Isn’t it cool how the whole Bible works together?

Now you might be asking yourself, what does this mean for me?

Don’t “delight in evil” by wishing bad stuff would happen to someone you don’t like or by having fun in disobeying your parents or other adults in charge of you.

Instead, “rejoice in the truth” by telling the truth, admitting when you’ve done wrong and asking forgiveness, and by forgiving others when they ask for it too.
